Service and panel work

Electrical panel upgrades and service replacements in Belmont County

The panel is where every circuit in the house ends. DC Electric replaces tired panels and fuse boxes, upgrades services to 200 and 400 amps, and builds double panels for houses and shops that have outgrown one. Every breaker is labelled before we leave.

When a panel needs replacing

Breakers that trip for no reason, lights that dim when the well pump starts, a fuse box, a panel with no spare spaces, or scorch marks and a warm cover. A house that has added an electric range, a heat pump, a hot tub or an electric vehicle charger is often past what its original service can carry.

200 amp and 400 amp services

A service upgrade replaces the meter base, the service entrance and the panel so the house can carry today's loads with room for next year's. A 200 amp service covers most homes. Larger homes, homes with a shop or a barn on the same service, and all-electric houses go to 400 amps, usually as two panels.

A panel you can read

The Code requires a circuit directory on every panel. Ours names each breaker by what it actually feeds, with spare spaces filled and the card on the door. Every terminal is tightened with a torque tool to the value the maker prints on the equipment, which is what the Code requires and what keeps a lug from loosening and heating over the years.

What the job involves

A free estimate at the house, a written price, the permit pulled, the utility coordinated for the disconnect and reconnect, and inspection when it is done. Most panel replacements are one day. A full service upgrade is usually one day too, with the power off for part of it.

Questions people ask

How do I know if my panel is at capacity?
If there are no spare spaces, if the main breaker trips under normal use, or if you are adding a large load such as an EV charger or a heat pump, have it looked at. We check the panel and the service and tell you which it needs before any work starts.
Do you replace fuse boxes?
Yes. A fuse box is replaced with a breaker panel, and the service is brought up to current code at the same time.
Is a permit required?
Yes. Panel and service work is permitted and inspected in Ohio, and DC Electric handles that as part of the job.
